:

Watch the video above to find out how the finalist answered.

The Finalist

Teacher's Name:

Jason Huber

Grade:

7th-8th

Subject Area (If Applicable):

English

School Name:

Eastern University Academy Charter

School City:

Philadelphia

School State:

PA

Teacher's Bio

:

Jason Huber teaches seventh and eighth grade Communications at Eastern University Academy Charter School in Philadelphia. Students typically come from at-risk neighborhoods, so Huber inspires them to think outside of themselves, showing them that the world they live in does not have to be the world they continue to live in. Students create ecotourism companies, and sell their art, building business skills and school morale. With the Global Classroom Project, Huber takes students to Costa Rica for a week-long service program. To fund the project, students become grant writers and pound the pavement in their neighborhoods, building a coalition of families who want their children to have this life-changing experience.

As the Principal and CEO of Eastern University Academy Charter School, it is a pleasure to have Jason Huber on staff. When I hired him, I asked him to do some "big things" with our students and he has certainly done so. In his first year, he took students to Costa Rica. It was certainly a life-changing experience for our students and I am hopeful that this will be another platform for Mr. Huber to "Think Big" on behalf of our families and students. Great things happen when you believe and we believe in Mr. Huber.

Jason has been impacting young people's lives for more than 15 years. He has had 4th graders that he taught find him as college students to thank him & let him know how much he influenced them. He has moved mountains with almost zero resources. With some dollars to seed his global project, the sky's the limit (or not).

Teacher Jason - talented, motivated, and passionate. Leading by example, he encourages Youth to push the boundaries of convention, making learning both relevant and interesting! His ideas, and his ability to make them happen, are inspiring throughout the whole school community.

Teacher Jason is an excellent teacher! He has been able to develop an expansive program with very little start-up support. He has become the definition of "THINKING BIG" at Eastern University Academy Charter School and is constantly creating new plans and pushing his students in new, innovative, and at times, frightening (in a good way) ways. This support would allow him and his students to "EXCELL AT LIFE".

Don't forget that he also teaches students to care about themselves, each other and the world around them. He truly creates students who "LIVE ON PURPOSE".
